I absolutely loved Nat in Civil War, and I think her characterization was executed pretty much flawlessly. I mean, when I first heard she was going to be on Team Stark I was like, Nat, what the hell?
But when she first voices her reasons for wanting to sign the Accords, it’s not “I trust the government to tell me what to do better than I trust myself despite numerous times that organizations of power lied to me, kept things from me, and used me,” it’s “Look, people in power are about to try to take control away from us and honestly, it may not even be worth trying to stop them. But if we at least act like we’re going along with it, maybe we can keep some control, as well as the public’s trust.”
And I feel like that is the most in-character thing they could have had Natasha Romanoff say on the matter. She’s not all fuck you, I do what I want the way Steve can get, at least not on the outside. Nat is strategic. She’s doing what she thinks is smartest, what’s most likely to work out best in the long run.
